2010-12-23 : IFA LAUNCHES FOUR-POINT STRATEGY TO KEEP RURAL IRELAND OPEN DURING SEVERE WEATHER CONDITIONS

The IFA Executive Council has adopted a Strategy designed to alleviate the worst effects of the severe weather conditions on farm families and rural dwellers. IFA President John Bryan said he has sought a meeting with the National Emergency Response Committee to discuss the Association’s proposals.

IFA Rural Development Chairman Tom Turley has urged the Minister for Agriculture Brendan Smith to fully utilise the total 2010 allocation for REPS this year to avoid the carryover of payments on next year’s budget estimate.

Responding to confirmation of a further delay in the payment of €10/ewe under the new Sheep Scheme by the Department of Agriculture this week, IFA National Sheep Committee Chairman James Murphy said sheep farmers were disappointed, angry and frustrated by the saga surrounding a payment which the Minister for Agriculture Brendan Smith promised would be made on December 8th.

IFA National Dairy Committee Chairman Kevin Kiersey said the decision by Glanbia to offer their suppliers the opportunity to "hedge" a minimum 15% of their milk at 28c/l + VAT for 3 years was a positive move to address farmer concerns over price volatility.
