Henry Burns - Chairman

HENRY BURNS ELECTED NEW IFA NATIONAL LIVESTOCK CHAIRMAN

At a recent meeting of the IFA National Livestock Committee in the Farm Centre in Dublin, Henry Burns from County Laois was elected as the new Chairman of the IFA National Livestock Committee.

Speaking following his election Henry Burns said his priorities will be maintaining strong viable cattle prices to drive the recovery and growth in the beef sector at farm level and protecting the Single Farm Payment in the CAP 2013 reform for livestock farmers.  Henry Burns said he was very clear that the incomes of livestock farmers must improve.

The new IFA Livestock leader said cattle prices, currently at €4.20/kg, are only at a level where they need to be for farmers to get a real return from the market place.

A mixed livestock sheep and tillage farmer from Mountmellick, Co. Laois Henry Burns is a former Chairman of the IFA National Sheep Committee and served as County Secretary of the Laois IFA County Executive.  In addition, Henry Burns has experience at both national and EU level having represented farmers on the National Sheep Forum, Bord Bia and as a member of the EU Sheep Advisory Committee in Brussels.

Henry Burns said viable cattle prices and the protection of Direct Payments are crucial.  Price competition, a strong live export trade, rewarding quality and quality assurance as well as security of payment are all vitally important.

Henry Burns thanked the outgoing National Livestock Chairman Michael Doran from County Wexford who served as National Livestock Chairman for the last 4 years.
