DAIRY INVESTMENT SCHEME MUST FACILITATE EXPANSION AND EQUIPMENT UPGRADE AS WELL AS YOUNG FARMERS - KIERSEY
IFA National Dairy Committee Chairman Kevin Kiersey said the forthcoming Dairy Investment Scheme, which was first announced over a year ago, and which is to make €45m of EU funds available for on-farm investment should facilitate expanding farmers and those needing to upgrade equipment as well as young farmers. He said this would be essential if the Government 2020 target of a 50% expansion were to have any chance of being delivered.

CO-OPS MUST MOVE FROM DISCUSSION TO ACTION - KIERSEY
At the latest IFA meeting held in Longford to discussion the necessary consolidation of the dairy industry, IFA National Dairy Committee Chairman Kevin Kiersey said it was important that the strong positive consensus expressed by co-op board members about further consolidation of the industry would be rapidly followed up by determined action.

CO-OPS CAN AFFORD TO PAY 30C/L + VAT FOR JULY
IFA National Dairy Committee Chairman Kevin Kiersey has said that late July market returns for most EU commodities were around 35c/l, with cheddar cheese and whey powder in excess of 37c/l, so that most co-ops could easily afford to pay farmers another 1.5c/l for July milk (see detailed returns in table below).

2020 MILK EXPANSION TARGETS WILL REQUIRE INDUSTRY CONSOLIDATION AND GOVERNMENT ACTION
Speaking at the Virginia Dairy Show, one of the country’s main showcases for progressive and commercial dairy farming, IFA President John Bryan said it was obvious at the Show that the badly needed recovery in milk prices had boosted farmers’ confidence in the future of the sector, which is critical to a vibrant rural economy.

National Dairy Committee Chairman

Kevin Kiersey farms in partnership with his brother John in Kilmacthomas, Co Waterford.  Kevin and John run a dairy farm supplying Glanbia with a mixed enterprise involving beef and forestry.  Kevin is married to Maria and they have three children, Miriam, Patrick and James.

Representing Waterford on the IFA National Dairy Committee for the past four years, Kevin has been Vice-Chairman of the Committee for the past two years.

From 1997 to 2000 Kevin was Chairman of the Waterford Agricultural Show.
