Amii Cahill, IFA National Pigs and Pigmeat Committee Secretary attended a workshop on Pig Welfare in the EU Commission on Tuesday November 17th 2009
The workshop was attended by producers, stakeholders and other interested parties from all over the European Union. A number of case studies were presented as well as the economic effect of the legislation.
Although producers are open to the implementation of improved welfare for their animals, concerns were raised in relation to how European welfare legislation puts farmers at a competitive disadvantage as extra-EU have no intention of implementing as strict rules and yet can import meat into the EU freely.
