FARM PRICES ARE BELOW BREAKEVEN ACROSS ALL FOOD PRODUCTS
A major study of the food supply chain undertaken by The Irish Farmers’ Association shows that farmers producing everyday food products are operating below breakeven, and on average, they are getting just one-third of the final retail price. IFA President John Bryan emphasised this is not sustainable for producers, nor in the interests of consumers, and must be addressed through effective regulation of the food supply chain.

Reacting to media reports about supermarkets demanding money upfront from suppliers and processors to stock their goods, IFA President John Bryan said farmers were the main casualties as they are being forced to produce well below the cost of production to fund this corporate greed by the retail multiples.

IFA President John Bryan has welcomed the announcement by the Minister for Agriculture Brendan Smith to provide financial assistance to growers who have suffered serious crop losses as a result of the worst winter weather conditions in a generation during January.
