BXL AGENDA AG COUNCIL NEW

Agenda highlights

The Presidency will present its six month work programme and priorities as regards agriculture and fisheries issues.

Fisheries

Ministers will have an exchange of views on the Commission proposal on the sustainable management of external fishing fleets. The objective of the proposal is to modernise the management of authorisations for EU vessels to fish outside EU waters and authorisations granted to third country fishing vessels to operate in EU waters.

Agriculture

The Council will hold a debate on animal welfare. It will be based on a position paper prepared by the German, Swedish, Danish and Netherlands delegations calling for the establishment of an EU platform on animal welfare for stakeholders and competent authorities.

Furthermore, the European Commission will brief ministers on the state of play on international agricultural trade issues.

The Commission will also present its long term strategy for agricultural research to the Council. The strategy will focus on land-based primary production centred around agriculture and forestry, but will also extend to food and non-food chains and the rural economy.

Finally, the Council will be briefed on a conference on antimicrobial resistance, African swine fever, the market situation and the difficulties in the milk and pig sectors.
