Message from the President of the European Commission following the attacks in Brussels

“I wish to express my sincere condolences to the people of Brussels, the many injured, families and relatives of those unjustly affected this morning during the various explosions at Zaventem International Airport and in the Maelbeek metro station. I would also bring my support and solidarity to the Belgian authorities. I wish to commend the security forces, emergency services and all the people who rescued the victims and that many are still active on the ground. I also want to reassure staff the European Commission and the other institutions and tell them that their safety remains a priority for me. All possible measures will be taken in consultation with the Belgian authorities. These attacks affect Brussels today. Europe as a whole is involved. the European Union and the institutions must and will remain united in the face of terror. These events affect us but do not scare us. We continue our work to jointly cope with the terrorist threat and to provide European solutions to issues that affect us all. ” This message from President Juncker is also online in FR and DE. This morning, the College held its weekly meeting at which members of the College discussed the European security agenda. A report of this meeting will be presented by the Vice-President and Commissioner Georgieva Avramopoulos you can follow directly on EbS. A minute of silence was held in memory of the victims of the Berlaymont at 12:00 today with the King and Queen of Belgium and President Juncker, Prime Minister Michel and Prime Minister Valls. Then, President Juncker, President Michel and President Valls went to the Maelbeek metro station to honor the victims of yesterday.
