Agenda highlights – European Council 17-18 March
At their meeting in March, EU leaders will mainly discuss:
- MIGRATION .
- EUROPEAN SEMESTER / JOBS, GROWTH AND COMPETITIVENESS
In February, the European Council looked at the implementation of the decisions already taken and adopted conclusions to prepare the ground for the meeting in March. Discussions focused on humanitarian assistance, the implementation of the EU-Turkey Action Plan, external border management, and the operation of hotspots.
EU leaders debated the necessity to build a European consensus on migration. They also confirmed a special meeting with Turkey to discuss the refugee crisis to take place on 7 March 2016.
The timeline outlines the main measures taken by the EU, together with the member states, over the last few months.
European semester / jobs, growth and competitiveness
The European Council will review the implementation of country specific recommendations and discuss priorities for the 2016 European Semester.
In that context, the Netherlands Presidency will report on progress on the main initiatives to strengthen the single market.
