ENTER THE FBD YOUNG FARMER OF THE YEAR – FLY THE FLAG FOR YOUR SECTOR!President, Sectors
Are you the next FBD Young Farmer of the Year? If you’re an ambitious young farmer with at least three years experience, you should enter and fly the flag for your sector!
The 17th round of the competition is now open for entries and boasts prizes for all farm sectors as well as the prestigious top prize of a travel bursary and title of FBD Young Farmer of the Year. Entries are invited from all sectors where they will compete to represent their sector at the All-Ireland final in September.
This year, a representative from each sector will be chosen in every county and they will benefit from a targeted regional technical day. There, they will develop their specific skills and compete against their counterparts from other counties.
The competition was launched this week by organisers, Macra na Feirme, sponsors FBD and partners, the IFA with the help of the current FBD Young Farmer of the Year, Seán O’Donnell.
Macra na Feirme National President, Kieran O’Dowd, said, “We are delighted to launch the 17th year of the FBD Young Farmer of the Year competition. We have introduced sector prizes as we want to recognise young farmers’ achievements in all farming enterprises. The success of the agricultural industry relies on the contribution of all young farmers. It’s a positive and exciting time in farming and this competition is an ideal platform to highlight the strength and ambition of the industry.”
FBD Head of Farm & Business, Christy Doherty, said, “For 45 years now FBD has been committed to fostering the next generation of Irish farmers and is delighted to continue our sponsorship of this showcase event that encourages young farmers to be a champion for their sector. This is a dynamic time for young farmers who are expanding their farms to meet the increasing global demand for Irish produce. We expect to see the proof of this growth and development reflected in a record number of excellent applicants.”
IFA President Eddie Downey said, “The FBD Young Farmer of the Year award provides our young farmers with a wonderful opportunity to display their talent, innovation and determination to drive our industry. Since it began, we have had very worthy winners of this prestigious title and I know this year will be no different. The awards for each sector reflect the diverse talent that exists among the farming community and I would encourage young farmers to put their name forward”.
The aim of the competition is to recognise and reward the top young farmers in the country in all sectors.
Entrants are judged according to a number of criteria including farm business initiative and innovation, levels of farm efficiency and enterprise quality, farm safety and environmental protection awareness, as well as agricultural knowledge and community involvement.
The overall winner of the competition will receive a bursary to undertake international travel and study farm practices. Young farmers can also be nominated for the competition.
Forms are available from Macra na Feirme national office by phoning 01-426 8900, from your local IFA or FBD offices and for download here. You can also apply online on macra.ie.
