Commissioner Hogan in Istanbul for the G20 Agriculture Ministers Meeting (7-8 May)
Phil Hogan, Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, will be on 7-8 May in Istanbul, Turkey to participate in the G20 Agriculture Ministers meeting. The meeting will focus on food security and sustainability and ministers will exchange views on how to reduce food losses and waste. Commenting ahead of the meeting, Commissioner Hogan stated: “The principle of food security is entirely compatible with the G20’s core mission: to restore strong, sustainable and balanced growth to the global economy. Together, we must develop sustainable food systems and focus the international debate on increasing productivity, while continuing to address climate change and the sustainable management of natural resources.” Commissioner Hogan will meet many of his counterparts from across the globe at that occasion. The Group of Twenty (G20) comprises 19 countries plus the European Union. Turkey is serving as the president of the G20 in 2015. Read the EU Guidelines here
EU inaugurates the Universal Exposition 2015 in Milan
The European Union will tomorrow officially kick-start its programme of activities at the EXPO 2015 Universal Exhibition in Milan. Centred on the theme of global food and nutrition challenges, the EXPO is an opportunity for the EU to showcase its work in different food related areas from high food standards to international humanitarian aid. Through a number of conferences and workshops to be organised between May and the end of October, the EU will put particular focus on how science can help us improve food and nutrition security. The start of the programme as well as the EU’s pavilion at EXPO will be unveiled tomorrow by Tibor Navracsics, Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport, and in charge of the Joint Research Centre, which coordinates the EU’s participation at EXPO. Several other Commissioners will also attend EXPO to raise awareness of this important global issue. A press release is available online.
