Climate diplomacy: EU and the Pacific join forces ahead of new global climate deal

EU Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy Miguel Arias Cañete will attend the 46th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders meeting in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, from 7 to 11 September. The Commissioner will address Pacific leaders at the special session on climate change and meet with the Prime Minister of the host country Papua New Guinea, the Hon. Peter O’Neill, as well as the Prime Ministers and Ministers from the Marshall Islands, New Zealand, Australia, China, Kiribati, Tuvalu, Nauru, Fiji and Vanuatu. The visit comes few months ahead of the UN Climate Conference in Paris (COP21). Commissioner Arias Cañete said: “The EU and the Pacific are long-standing allies in the fight against climate change. Countries in this region are amongst the most vulnerable to its impacts – as demonstrated by the devastation caused by Cyclone Pam in March. This year’s Forum will be an important opportunity to unite together with the view to secure a strong and credible global climate deal that will significantly accelerate the global transition to a climate resilient sustainable future.” The Commission has set out its vision of a successful agreement: key elements are ambitious emissions reductions commitments, a long-term goal, robust transparency and accountability rules, and a dynamic review mechanism to strengthen ambition over time. The Paris outcome must also address adaptation to the impacts of climate change and the mobilisation of financing for climate action as well as reflect the issue of loss and damage associated with the impacts of climate change. Commissioner Arias Cañete will sign sustainable energy declarations with six Pacific countries (the Federated States of Micronesia, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Republic of the Marshall Islands and Tonga) which aim to accelerate action towards their national energy objectives and increase access to sustainable energy.
