Speech by President von der Leyen in plenary of the European Parliament on the special meeting of the European Council on 20 February on the multiannual financial framework

This morning in Parliament, President von der Leyen gave a speech on the ambitions of the Commission ahead of the European Council meeting on the adoption of the next European budget 2021-2027. The president said: “We have very clear common political objectives: we must be the first climate neutral continent in 2050, we want to embrace the digital transition and we want to support our citizens and our regions so that they can reap the full benefits of these major transformations, by investing in education and training for the jobs of tomorrow. But time is running out. And I repeat: if our next budget is not decided quickly, next year we will not be able to start investing in these priorities. We all know that these negotiations will not be easy. But we also know that citizens will not understand if decision-makers fail to provide the funding necessary for these priorities. It is our joint responsibility, with the Council and the European Parliament, to make things happen for Europe. »You will find the entire speech online.
