Dairy market: 99% of public stocks of skimmed milk powder are now sold

Held successfully this morning, the last sale of skimmed milk powder means that 99% of the total stocks bought and managed by the Commission have now been sold. Inventories were cautiously sold, maintaining the market equilibrium and supporting the recovery of the dairy sector after the 2015-16 market crisis. Phil Hogan, Commissioner for Agriculture said: “The last sale clearly validates the Commission’s cautious approach to the management of the skimmed-milk powder stock, of which 99% has been successfully put back on the market. My goal has always been to use public intervention as a measure to protect farmers’ incomes and, to that extent, we have resisted calls made over the last three years to reduce stocks in different ways or even just for farmers. destroy. None of these options would have achieved the result we have just achieved. Instead, our patient approach ensured that not only were European dairy farmers’ incomes protected, but also the interests of the European taxpayer. A total of 380,000 tonnes of skimmed milk powder were purchased by the European Commission between 2015 and 2017 through public intervention to stabilize the market and support farmers’ incomes. A monthly and then bi-weekly auction process was opened by the Commission at the end of 2016 in order to resell the products on the market. A press release is online, as well as a visual fact sheet.
