New expertise exchange initiative to better manage Regional Policy investments
Today the Commission is launching a new platform for public service officials to exchange expertise and best practice around Europe to further improve how EU investments are spent and managed. By helping Member States strengthen administrative capacity, TAIEX REGIO PEER 2 PEER, or PEER 2 PEER, is part of a broader initiative to fully use the potential of Regional Policy to create jobs and ensure sustainable growth, in line with the goals set by the Europe 2020 Strategy and the EU’s new 315 billion euro Investment Plan. This is particularly relevant for countries with low absorption rates, such as Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia. A press release and a fact sheet are available online and more information on how the Commission is helping improve the management of Regional Policy funds is available here.
How safe are your roads? Commission road safety statistics show small improvement for 2014
Following two years of solid decreases in the number of people killed on Europe’s roads, the first reports on road deaths in 2014 are disappointing. According to the figures released today, the number of road fatalities has decreased by approximately 1% compared to 2013. This follows on the 8% decrease in 2012 and 2013. The figures reveal a total of 25 700 road deaths in 2014 across all 28 Member States of the EU. Whilst this is 5700 fewer than in 2010, it falls short of the intended target decrease. Violeta Bulc, Commissioner for Transport said: “It’s sad and hard to accept that almost 70 Europeans die on our roads every day, with many more being seriously injured. The figures published today should be a wake-up call. They also remind us that road safety requires constant attention and further efforts.” Read the press release.
