IFA PRESIDENT CHAIRS FIRST MEETING OF COPA WORKING PARTY ON THE FOOD CHAINIFA in Brussels, President
IFA President Eddie Downey will chair his first meeting of the COPA-COGECA Working Party on the Food Chain in Brussels today as the new Chairman. The IFA President was elected as Chairman in April of the high-level group, which represents farmers across Europe in pushing for reform of the food chain in Brussels.
Eddie Downey said the work of the group would complement the efforts of IFA in Ireland to secure effective legislation that delivers a fair return to producers that rewards their work and investment and gives them a margin.
The IFA President said he was committed to working through COPA to convince the EU political system of the need for primary producers to be treated with more equity.
He said, “If unchecked, retail power will continue to put downward pressure on the price received by farmers. This will undermine their viability and threaten their livelihoods. Effective statutory legislation is needed in this country and at European level if the supply chain is to be rebalanced”.
