INFORMAL AGRICULTURE COUNCIL 30-31 MAYBrussels Daily
Informal meeting of Ministers of Agriculture and the Special Committee on Agriculture (a parallel meeting of civil servants)
There are great challenges ahead for European agriculture. Over the next 30 years the world’s population will grow to 9 billion. All of these people will need sufficient healthy food produced in a responsible way. In the meantime, consumers are becoming more critical of food quality. In order to meet these challenges and remain competitive in the global market, the European agricultural sector will have to innovate and become more sustainable. This informal meeting will therefore focus on the future of the post-2020 Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). The theme is ‘Food of the future − the future of food’. Following a reception on Sunday evening the ministers will visit the ‘STEC food’ exhibition in Eindhoven on Monday morning. The exhibition – which will also be open to the public – is dedicated to innovation in food production and consumption. There will also be visits to companies. On Tuesday the ministers will meet at the National Maritime Museum in Amsterdam to discuss the future of the CAP. At the same time the subject will also be discussed at civil service level in the Europe Building.
