LAMB PRICES RISING

Prices, Sheep

Speaking at an IFA Sheep Committee meeting in Dublin this week, National Chairman John Lynskey said lamb prices have improved this week with €4.75/kg widely available and some top prices of €4.80/kg paid.

John Lynskey called for the carcase weights to increase to 23kgs from November 1st. He said some deals have already moved up to this level.

On numbers, the IFA Sheep farmer leader said the total kill is up by 215,480 head year to date. He said this includes an increase in the kill of 125,000 hoggets, an increase of 43,744 in ewes and 46,221 more spring lambs killed. He said these figures are strong and indicate that a lot of numbers have already moved.

On the store lamb trade, John Lynskey said a lot of hill sheep farmers have fed lambs themselves this year and moving them directly to slaughter. He said farmers have moved lambs earlier and lighter this year. “All of this indicates that supplies could be tighter going forward and finished lamb supplies could be in much shorter supply in early 2018,” John Lynskey said.
