Very little change in relation to markets this week, retail demand remains high and steady and the processing market continues to struggle, with slight improvement on last week, as more takeaways and restaurants open on a take-out basis. Crops are progressing well at present with no significant difficulties reported. Rain in some parts of the country towards the end of last week was welcomed by growers, however, growers in the north-east got very little rain and conditions remain very dry.

In the U.K. the market situation is mirrored by our predicament here. Potato stocks held by growers at the end of march totalled 1.19 million tonnes, according to AHDB. This figure is 20% higher than the same point last season and 5 % above the five-year average. It is important to note this figure alludes to just one week of the ‘lockdown’ affect.

Across Europe demand in the free buy processing sector is “virtually zero”. Factories  are doing their best to clear contracts and activity ranges from 20 to 100% depending   on the markets being supplied. The export and fast food outlets remain closed but there is light par fry demand.
