FLOOD RELIEF WORKS MUST BE ACCELERATED – IFA TELL MINISTER DEMPSEY

Rural Development

IFA Deputy President Eddie Downey has said that the Government must speed up flood alleviation works to avoid a repeat of the severe flooding of last winter.

Mr Downey was speaking following a constructive meeting along with senior officers of Galway IFA and the Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey at the opening of the Gort bypass in Co Galway today.

The IFA Deputy President said serious concern was expressed to the Minister of the impact that road developments will have on the natural drainage systems in the South Galway area. With the remainder of the road construction to Galway due to be completed shortly, additional resources must be made available to avoid flooding caused by the new road.

Mr Downey also raised the concern that other Government agencies are holding up essential works on the river systems in the area. The National Parks and Wildlife Service must be tackled as they have consistently objected to vital flood alleviation works

Mr Downey said that Minister Dempsey gave a commitment that he would bring all the relevant agencies together to examine the next stage of the motorway and to ensure that all the issues related to flooding be looked at.
