Price Discounting at the Expense of Potato and Vegetable Growers Is Not on – IFA

IFA Potato and Vegetable Chairs Thomas Carpenter and Matt Foley have sent a clear warning to the retail sector that a repeat of last year’s price discounting at the expense of potato and vegetable producers in the run-up to Christmas is not on.

The Chairs said “current prices for potato and vegetable growers must increase as the viability of growers is already in question and the harsh weather is adding significantly to on farm costs.”

“Farmers will hold retailers directly responsible for pricing policies that would force them to produce below the cost of production. Retailer’s margins are more than sufficient to increase prices for hard pressed potato and vegetable growers as it is time for a more equitable share out of the consumer price,” they added.
