CRUCIAL THAT MINISTER COVENEY OPENS AEOS – IFARural Development
IFA President John Bryan has said it was crucial that the Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney re-opens the AEOS for the 10,000 farmers immediately. Farmers expect that the scheme will be re-opened well in advance of the mid-May deadline to give them ample opportunity to apply.
Mr Bryan said, “The AEOS is a vital scheme for low-income farmers, particularly in the drystock sector. Up to 10,000 will be leaving REPS3 by mid-May and these farmers must have a scheme available to them to continue the valuable environmental works which will be part of a five-year contract.”
The IFA President said he raised the issue with the Minister in their first meeting and emphasised the importance of opening the AEOS without delay. He said, “Farm schemes such as the AEOS and REPS make up a significant part of farm incomes and are crucial in stimulating the rural economy and supporting jobs. The new Government must ensure that all farm schemes are fully funded and remain in place to maintain our productive base, which will be an important element in fulfilling the growth potential of Food Harvest 2020.”
