Lamb Prices Continue to Rise – IFA

Sheep Welfare Scheme

IFA National Sheep Committee Chairman James Murphy said the sheep trade continues to strengthen both here and in Northern Ireland. He said hoggets are making €5.90/kg with some top prices of €6.00/kg paid up to 24kg carcase weight.

With over 2 weeks to go to Easter James Murphy said the new season lamb is also increasing positively with prices ranging from €6.40 to €6.60/kg. At the marts he said spring lambs are making up to €139/head which is the equivalent of €6.62/kg at 21kgs carcase weight. In Northern Ireland, hoggets have moved up to the equivalent of €6.00/kg and spring lambs are making €6.61/kg.

James Murphy said butchers will be in the market for spring lamb from next week at the marts. He said farmers who have worked hard and encountered high costs this year with spring lambs needed to carefully select lambs for sale.
