IFA SAYS VALUE FOR MONEY REVIEW ON SUCKLER WELFARE SCHEME MUST BE POSITIVEUncategorized
IFA National Livestock Committee Chairman Michael Doran said the Value for Money Review on the Suckler Cow Welfare scheme must be positive and recognise the real value of the scheme to Ireland’s €2bn beef and livestock sector.
Michael Doran said the Value for Money Review is about to conclude and the findings of the group must accurately reflect the positive view of the scheme right across the beef and livestock sector. He said Minister Coveney has outlined his strong support for the scheme and this must be reflected in the views of the review group.
In addition, Michael Doran said farmers are very positive about the benefits of the scheme and IFA made a detailed presentation to the review group in April which must be fully reflected in the conclusions.
The Suckler Cow Welfare Scheme has revolutionised beef breeding and the collection of data and ICBF has made it clear the breeding benefits are worth up to an extra €100m per annum to the beef and livestock sector.
Bord Bia has highlighted the very significant market benefits, particularly in relation to the important live export trade, which can add an additional €50 to €100 per head in terms of cattle price competition.
Michael Doran said the SCWS has made a major contribution to the beef and livestock sector, particularly in terms of stabilising the National Suckler cow herd. He said all of the benefits of the scheme must be accurately and fully reflected in the conclusions of the Review group.
