IFA JOINS CAP ALLIANCE IN FRANCE

A high-level IFA delegation will participate in a joint Franco-Irish initiative this week with a number of countries that have difficulties with the Ciolos CAP proposals.
Up to ten countries, including France, Spain, Italy, Austria, Denmark, Portugal, Belgium, Scotland and Wales will meet in Paris today Friday (20th of April).

IFA European Director Michael Treacy said, “There is a growing realisation in the countries taking part that the Ciolos proposals, particularly the convergence of direct payments in such a short time period, and greening, would have too negative an impact on production and farm family viability. The ‘greening’ and convergence proposals will have to be amended to allow a greater degree of flexibility in any final outcome.”

Michael Treacy said this week’s meeting is an important step in establishing an alliance of opposition in Europe to address the most negative aspects of the CAP proposals. “While the alliance is unlikely to have a clear position on all issue, it will, nevertheless, form an important role in negotiating the changes necessary to underpin active, productive farmers in the CAP post-2013
