IFA – Stronger Lamb Trade

Sheep Welfare Scheme

IFA National Sheep Committee Chairman James Murphy said the lamb market is stronger this week with prices rising in France and a bit more life in prices at the factories.
James Murphy said Bord Bia are reporting French prices up 20c/kg on last week to €6.10/kg incl Vat. In France, grade 1 hoggets are making the equivalent of €5.45/€5.50/kg.
Factories are paying from €5.60 to €5.80/kg for lambs with top prices of €5.90/kg paid including all bonuses. James Murphy said carcase weights are ranging from 20kgs to 21kgs.

The IFA Sheep Chairman said farmers are having to be very tough with the factories and have to bargain hard for every cent, on both the price and the weight.

Following a round of meetings with all of the main factory groups last week including Kepak, ICM, Kildare, Dawn and Jennings, James Murphy said the clear view is that prices must be maintained at last years’ levels to keep confidence at farm level.
