IFA WELCOME MCDONALDS AND DAWN MEATS NEW €300 MILLION CONTRACT FOR IRISH BEEFUncategorized
IFA President John Bryan today welcomed the announcement of a new €300m contract for the supply of Irish beef between Dawn Meats and McDonalds describing it as ‘a major positive development for the Irish beef and livestock sector’.
John Bryan said Dawn Meats have been awarded a 5-year contract worth €300m to process up to 18,000 tonnes of Irish beef annually for McDonalds. As part of the contract Dawn has invested €14.5m in a new beef processing facility in Waterford, creating 65 new jobs.
The IFA President said, “A key element in the strong relationship between McDonalds and the Irish beef sector, which is reflected in this contract, is the high level of quality assurance provided by Irish farmers. It is essential that farmers are adequately rewarded for quality with a strong price premium for quality assurance.”
John Bryan said McDonalds is the single largest purchaser of Irish beef by volume, purchasing about 40,000 tonnes of Irish beef annually, supplied from 18,000 quality assured Irish farms. He said 20% of all beef used in McDonalds restaurants across Europe is of Irish origin, meaning 1 in every 5 hamburgers purchased in McDonalds in Europe comes from Irish beef.
