EUROSTAT FIGURES HIGHLIGHTS NEED FOR URGENT GOVERNMENT ACTION ON CODE OF PRACTICE – IFA

Uncategorized

Commenting on today’s Eurostat report comparing food price levels in Europe, IFA President John Bryan said the findings confirm the need for urgent Government action to curb the dominant position of the retail multiples in the Irish market.
He said, “Ireland is the fifth highest priced country in the EU for food and non-alcoholic beverages, with consumer price levels 18% above the EU average in 2011. In contrast, farmgate prices in Ireland are on a par with other European countries. Today’s CSO Farm Income report shows an increase for 2011, but average farm income was still only €24,000.”

He said, “The Government must move to introduce a Code of Practice for the retail multiples immediately, as there has been an even greater concentration of control in the retail food sector in the last 12 months. Three retailers now account for nearly 80% of the grocery market.”
