IFA PRESIDENT ACCUSES MINISTER AND DEPARTMENT OF MISLEADING FARMERS ON REALITY OF CIOLOS PROPOSALS

Uncategorized

IFA President John Bryan has accused the Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney and his Department of seriously misleading farmers by grossly understating the threat posed by the Commission’s CAP proposals in today’s Farmers Journal.
He said “The reality of the proposals, which Commissioner Ciolos is persisting with, is not only for a flattening of the basic payment by 2019, but also a flat-rate greening payment. This will lead to massive cuts for tens of thousands of productive farmers, and would result in cuts in payments far in excess of what the Minister and his Department suggested in today’s Farmers Journal”.

John Bryan said the Minister’s figures provide farmers with a false sense of security about the level of cuts that the Commission is hell bent on achieving, whereby thousands of farmers would lose up to 50% of their payment.  “Farmers will be in Dublin next Tuesday for the Day of Action, where they will be sending a clear message to the Minister that he will be held to account if he fails to secure a full CAP Budget and minimises the damage to the Single Farm Payment and Rural Development schemes for farmers.”
