Septic Tank Grant Scheme Is Right Decision to Support Rural Households

IFA Environment and Rural Affairs Chairman, Harold Kingston, has welcomed the decision by the Minister for Environment, Community and Local Government, Phil Hogan, T.D., to provide financial assistance for homeowners that are required to upgrade their septic tanks following an inspection by the local authority.

Mr. Kingston said, “The new regulations increase the obligations on homeowners, many of whom installed their waste water treatment systems to comply with the standards when planning was granted.  However, now certain households will be able to avail of a maximum grant of €4,000 for remediation and upgrading works if problems are identified during an inspection.”

“Rural households and farmers depend on good clean water and have an interest in ensuring their septic tanks conform to environmental standards.  It is important that all homeowners are given every opportunity to register before the 1 February 2013 deadline and avail of the package of measures.”
