IFA President Joe Healy said the latest EU FVO (Food and Veterinary Office) report covering the Weak Flesh meat scandal and corruption in Brazil confirms that the Brazilian authorities seriously misled the EU Commission, and cannot guarantee European consumers that meat products exported to the EU have been produced in accordance with EU requirements.
The IFA is protesting this morning outside the EU Commission offices in Mount Street in Dublin. The protest is over the EU Commission’s proposal to offer Brazil and other South American countries further access to the EU market for beef and poultry as part of the Mercosur trade negotiations.

Following strong lobbying by IFA in Brussels over the last two weeks, IFA National Livestock Chairman Angus Woods said the Chairman of the European Parliament’s Agriculture Committee Czeslaw Siekierski has tabled an oral question for the plenary agenda in Strasbourg tomorrow (Mon) afternoon on ‘how the Brazilian revelations will impact ongoing trade talks with Mercosur countries?’ and whether it was ‘now time to review bilateral negotiations and remove meat from the trade agenda?’
