PotatoPotato Market Reports

Potato Market Update 18th December

Growers continue to lift remaining crop where possible, however, ground conditions are getting increasingly difficult. It is most likely that a lot of remaining crop will be left in the ground until springtime. Demand has been very strong over the past week as growers meet Christmas orders.

Similarly, in the U.K. growers are lifting where possible and crop that are being lifted this week are being sold as quickly as possible, as they are not suitable for storage. Reports in the U.K. indicate that so far stores are keeping well with no reports of any major breakdowns.

In Europe there are still crops on the heavier soils bordering Channel coast lines from France up to the Netherlands that remain to be cleared but the area is now “small”.

Since July, factories in Belgium are reported to have processed 300,000t’s and France 6,000t’s

more of raw potatoes than last year. Export movement of fresh potatoes continues to Eastern Europe     from Germany and stocks are noticeably declining in the North and East of the country.
