Sales of early potatoes particularly Queens were reported to very strong this season which is a reflection of the excellent quality on offer. This augurs well for the main season crops, with early reports suggesting that movement is very positive. A survey of early crop Rooster growers indicates that most will be finished harvesting by the end of next week.
Recent rainfall has delayed harvesting in some areas particularly in Donegal where growers are struggling to make progress with early main crop. Initial yield reports are still pointing to low tuber numbers around the country.
Across the UK and Europe, the harvest is progressing well with prices remaining steady. In France and Germany, the trade for fresh potatoes in particular remains strong with exports to Eastern Europe still continuing.
