IFA meets co-ops for spring support

Throughout January 2016, the IFA Dairy Committee met with dairy co-ops to urge them to support dairy farmers in the face of a difficult spring by holding milk prices and by providing technical, financial and merchant credit backing and assistance.

Dairy Chairman Sean O’Leary stressed that co-ops’ support of milk prices, together the support of other stakeholders, would continue to be needed in 2016.

The Committee urged co-ops to increase co-operation with neighbouring processors to consolidate efficiencies and improve co-ops’ abilities to pay the level of sustainable milk prices without which farmers will be unable to deliver the extra milk needed to optimally utilise our additional processing capacity.

Co-ops were also encouraged to engage with other industry stakeholders, in providing farmers with the long-term instruments they will need to manage their way through high levels of income volatility.
