Chairman IFA Forestry Committee
Pat is a full time farmer and farms across three sectors – beef, sheep and forestry in Co. Roscommon; he is married and has three children. Elected as Chairman of the IFA Farm Forestry committee in 2016, Pat has been on the Committee since 2014.
His interest in forestry began due to the suitability of the land type on his farm – varying from very dry grassland to wet mineral rush dominated land, in turn leading to bog. Pat first planted in 2006 with Sitka spruce. He continued to plant in 2009 when the Rural Development policy changed and farmers were allowed to stack their entitlements, and again in 2012.
Pat has found forestry to be a very positive experience and as he continues to learn more about his trees and the management of his crop, his interest grows. Being actively engaged in the management of of his forest is key to protecting his investment.
