FRESH MILK CAN’T BE TAKEN FOR GRANTED

On 18th July, IFA gathered in Dublin all the industry and retail stakeholders for the first ever Liquid Milk Forum titled “Securing Fresh Milk Supplies Post 2015”. The assembled farmers, retailers, industry representative, politicians and press heard how year-round supplies of locally produced fresh milk could no more be taken for granted than snow for the Eskimo, or coal in Newcastle.
With all the talk of dairy expansion after quotas, it is tempting to think that Ireland will be awash with fresh milk for consumers every day of the year. Speakers at the IFA Liquid Milk Forum have clearly shown this assumption is incorrect, because opportunities to grow milk production for export will force farmers to make cost based, cold blooded choices.

IFA will follow up on this first ever Forum to help forge genuine engagement from all stakeholders to secure the economic sustainability of the fresh milk chain, from farmer to consumer.
