STRONGER SENTENCES NEEDED FOR THOSE GUILTY OF ROBBING VULNERABLE IN SOCIETY

Speaking at the AGM of Clare IFA last night (Tues), IFA President Eddie Downey called for stronger sentences for those who rob vulnerable people in society.

He said the experience of the pensioner in Co Clare whose home was repeatedly robbed, again highlights the vulnerability of older people in our society.

The IFA President said the sentences for those who are guilty of these offences do not appear to be a strong enough deterrent. “There is a small group in our society which preys on people who are living alone and who exploit their isolation. Our legal system must send out a strong message to those who are convicted.”

Eddie Downey said Garda patrols need to be more frequent in rural communities and is it important that high visibility is maintained, particularly in remote areas.

Eddie Downey said IFA would continue its work with An Garda Siochana to assist in providing any information that will help the fight against crime. The Association’s membership, through our branch network, is participating in a community Text Alert initiative
