IFA Environment and Rural Affairs Chairman Thomas Cooney has described proposals to increase Garda numbers and expenditure on rural broadband, and the extension of the home renovation incentive, start your own business relief and capital allowances for energy efficient equipment to sole traders including farmers, as “important measures for rural Ireland which must be supported by real action on the ground.”

National Dairy Chairman Sean O’Leary has said the 800 farmers who attended recent IFA Dairy Income Meetings focused most of their questions on the sustainability of the market recovery, how soon co-ops would pass back enough from improving markets for them to return to positive margins, and what government would do with EU, state aids and taxation to support cash flow in volatile markets.

IFA President Joe Healy said today’s Budget has responded positively to IFA’s farm income campaign over the last six months with significant measures on low-cost loans, increased funding for farm schemes, the reversal of cuts to Farm Assist and flexibility on income averaging to help deal with volatility.
