Speaking after last week’s meeting of the IFA National Dairy Committee, Chairman Sean O’Leary said the Committee were clear that co-ops still need to focus on increasing milk prices before peak, in order to deliver the 33c/l average some industry leaders have predicted for 2017, and the Committee would lobby co-op board members accordingly this month.

IFA National Dairy Chairman Sean O’Leary has said the 3.2% fall in this week’s GDT auction, which traded product for the months of March to August 2017, reflects buyers’ speculation egged by the slightly less negative revised New Zealand 2016/17 milk output forecast (-5% instead of -7%).

IFA National Dairy Chairman Sean O’Leary has said multiple indicators are now confirming that the dairy market recovery is very much underway. EU and global output is back, demand is picking up in China and other markets, and prices continue to lift. Mr O’Leary urged all in the industry to make every effort to leverage the best possible returns over the coming months, and to pass back every last possible cent to help farmers deal with their cash flow crisis.
