IFA National Dairy Chairman Tom Phelan has said that co-op boards, meeting in coming days to set the January milk price, could, despite more challenging times for dairy markets, take comfort from 3 consecutive positive GDT auctions, and from the stability shown by the Ornua January PPI.
Commenting on the very day that the GDT is having its 200th auction, IFA National Dairy Chairman Sean O’Leary said that while international dairy prices are easing, Irish co-ops are still benefiting from contract returns signed in better times, as evidenced by the September rise in the Ornua PPI.
As the GDT auction registers another small 0.2% rise today, IFA National Dairy Committee Chairman Sean O’Leary called on co-ops to work harder on passing back as much of the dairy upturn as possible to farmers, who after two years of challenging cash flow still have some way to go to rebalance their farm finances.
Commenting on today’s 3.1% uplift in the GDT auction index, IFA National Dairy Committee Chairman Sean O’Leary welcomed the recovery in powder prices. SMP prices lifted by a very significant 7.1% on average, while WMP – the auction’s most traded product – saw a 3.5% average price increase.
