IFA’s Smart Farming programme leader Thomas Cooney has encouraged farmers to drop by the IFA stand at the National Ploughing Championships this week and take the €5,000 Smart Farming on-farm cost saving challenge.

Speaking on the first day of the Ploughing he said, “Commodity prices across all sectors remain challenging, with IFA President Joe Healy leading a robust campaign to secure higher returns for farm families. In addition to this, IFA is working to improve farm returns through better resource management, particularly in the areas of feed, energy, grassland management and soil fertility.”

The Smart Farming initiative, which is now in its third year, draws on the knowledge and expertise of Teagasc, EPA, SEAI, UCD and others. It is making a real difference; the average cost savings identified on participating farms is €5,000 on each farm.

With 30 cost-saving study places available, these have the potential to identify a combined savings of €150,000. Farmers can register at the IFA stand during the Ploughing or on the Smart Farming Website.
