This Week’s Potato Prices and Market Overview

Demand for potatoes has been a little muted this week on wholesale markets however, growers have no issues moving product. Due to the cold weather demand remains robust throughout Europe.

Prices remain firm with the outlook indicating that further price rises are on the horizon. The unseasonal weather has affected early plantings in Cyprus and Majorca which are behind schedule, therefore they will have no impact on the storage market for the next two months at least.

Some growers in the south and south east have taken advantage of the drier weather and have planted some first early varieties last week. Farmers considering the planting of early potatoes this season need to remind themselves of the market last year where we had an oversupply of Queen and Premiere varieties.
