At a meeting of the European Parliament’s International Trade Committee, Cecilia Malmström outlined the results of the Nairobi ministerial conference of the World Trade Organisation and talked about the way ahead for multilateral trade negotiations.
The EU Trade Commissioner highlighted outcomes on agriculture and development as particularly valuable results of the negotiations, which brought ministers from 162 countries to the Kenyan capital. She also debriefed Members of the European Parliament on the first ministerial discussions on a way ahead, which had taken place in the margins of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland the previous weekend.
The EU wants time to reflect on exactly what those should be but favours continued engagement on the most important outstanding issues of the Doha Round, innovative negotiating approaches and a willingness to consider new issues that relate to today’s economic realities. Read the speech here
