Poultry Growers Should Remain Vigilant Following Suspected Case of Avian Flu

The IFA Poultry Committee Chair Brendan Soden has urged poultry and game bird producers to remain vigilant following reports of a suspected avian influenza outbreak at a pheasant breeding premises in Co Tyrone.

“Producers must remain alert and ensure the highest standards of biosecurity are in place across all poultry, backyard and game bird operations,” he said.

“Strict farm biosecurity is the most effective defence we have against the spread of avian influenza, and it is vital that all flock owners review their measures and follow official guidance,” he said.

He also reminded producers to closely monitor their birds and report any unusual illness or increased mortality to veterinary authorities without delay.

“This is about protecting the wider poultry sector. Early reporting and strict biosecurity are essential in preventing further spread.”

Members of the public are asked to follow official guidance: Do not touch or approach sick or dead wild birds and report findings to the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) through the usual channels or your local Regional Veterinary Office.
