Dairy Farmer Wins New Entrant Farming Awards in South Tipperary

Michael Tobin from New Inn, South Tipperary, has been announced as the overall winner of the New Entrant Farming Awards in South Tipperary, receiving the €5,000 first prize. Michael is a dairy farmer who impressed the judging panel with his commitment and ambition for the future of his farming enterprise.

Tom Morrissey from Ballypatrick, South Tipperary, was named runner-up, receiving the €2,000 second prize. Tom is involved in sheep farming and agricultural contracting.

The New Entrant Farming Awards, a joint initiative between South Tipperary IFA and Clonmel Credit Union, have been hailed as a tremendous success, recognising the ambition, commitment and determination of those establishing themselves in farming.

The awards were established to recognise and encourage new entrants into agriculture, regardless of age, gender or farming sector. The initiative aims to acknowledge the challenges faced by those starting out in farming while highlighting the importance of supporting the next generation of farmers.

South Tipperary IFA Chair Darragh Scott praised the quality of the applications received.

“We were absolutely delighted with the response to these awards and the standard of applications. Starting out in farming brings significant challenges, and it’s hugely encouraging to see so many ambitious people making a future for themselves in agriculture. I want to congratulate Michael Tobin and Tom Morrissey, acknowledge all six finalists, and sincerely thank Clonmel Credit Union for their tremendous support in making this initiative such a success,” Darragh said.

Michael O’Grady of Clonmel Credit Union said the awards reflected the Credit Union’s commitment to supporting farming and rural communities.

“Farming is hugely important to the communities we serve, and we are delighted to partner with South Tipperary IFA on this initiative. These awards recognise the hard work and ambition of new entrants while providing meaningful financial support as they establish themselves in farming. Congratulations to both winners and all the finalists. We look forward to building on the success of these awards in the years ahead,” Michael said.

The awards were presented as part of a Farm Succession and Planning Seminar, jointly organised by South Tipperary IFA, Waterford IFA and Clonmel Credit Union.

The seminar attracted farmers and their families from across the region and provided practical information on the opportunities and challenges associated with farm succession, inheritance and planning for the future of family farms.

Guest speakers included Alice Doyle, IFA Deputy President; Philip O’Connor of ifac; and James Staines, Solicitor, who provided valuable insights into the financial, legal and practical considerations involved in farm succession.

The initiative also demonstrates the value of co-operation between South Tipperary IFA and Clonmel Credit Union in providing meaningful encouragement and financial support to new entrants.

The awards have provided a valuable opportunity to celebrate the next generation of farmers and recognise the important contribution they will make to the future of Irish agriculture.
