The Department of Agriculture will this week issue application forms for the €3,000 flat rate payment for pig farmers.
Farmers have two weeks to submit forms to the Department, and payment will be processed following this.
The payment will be made to pig farmers with a minimum supply of 200 slaughter pigs in 2015 and originates from the EU income support package announced in September 2015.
IFA Pigs Committee Chairman Pat O’Flaherty has welcomed the payment but said it is far from sufficient to address the current cash flow problems pig farmers are experiencing. The crisis in the sector is not going to be solved until there is serious commitment by government on labelling legislation and until new markets are available to replace product that was once exported to Russia.
