Beef Update

IFA Livestock Chairman Declan Hanrahan said attempts by factories to further reduce cattle is unacceptable. He said supplies of cattle here and across the EU and UK are projected to be down this year with demand outstripping supply which will create opportunity for strong beef prices here. Factories are concerned about supplies and actively sourcing cattle to fill orders and are frequently calling finishers to see what’s available to them in the coming weeks. There is a 5c/kg to 10c/kg difference between quoted and paid prices and this is evident in marts where prices are exceeding what they are offering in a lot in instances. Factories are paying from €7.20kg to €7.40kg for steers and €7.30kg to €7.50kg for heifers. Young bulls are making from €7.40kg to €7.60kg. Cull cows are ranging from €6.40kg to €7.20kg depending on the grade. Declan Hnarahan said farmers should reject the negative propaganda from factories and their agents. Supplies are tight, demand is strong and factories are very anxious for cattle he said.

Sheep Update

IFA Sheep Chairman Adrian Gallagher said lamb numbers remain tight as overall throughput falls over 10,000 head in the past week. He said hogget numbers are dropping off on a weekly basis and with no surge of spring lamb coming to market numbers are expected to be tight in the coming weeks. This trend is replicated across the EU as production is projected to be 9% lower in the second half of 2025 compared with the same period in 2024. Total throughput remains well below last year’s levels with over 180,000 head less sheep processed in comparison to the same period last year. This week factory prices for spring lambs range from €8.70kg to €9.00kg with higher deals for groups and larger lots. Hoggets are making from €7.20kg to €7.40kg. Cull ewe prices range from €4.60kg to €5.20kg. Adrian Gallagher said farmers should sell hard and move lambs as they become fit.
