Market Prices and News
Last week global grain markets for wheat were mixed across the week. Nearby MATIF futures for May-26 dropped €3.50/t to close on Friday 17th April at €191.25/t. The rebound of the Euro/dollar exchange rate back to around €1=$1.18 last week makes EU wheat less competitive.
For new crop futures MATIF wheat, at the time of writing, is trading at €216.50/t for Dec-26, up €4/t from a close of €212/t on Friday, April 17th.
In Chicago, wheat futures have risen in response to the very poor crop situation in key production states like Kansas. Only 30% of US winter wheat is rated as good or excellent, down 18 % points from assessments back in November (USDA). New crop futures for Jul/September are trading between $6.02-6.15 per bushel which is €221-225/t.
For maize, the US planting campaign has commenced with 11% planted as of 17th April, marginally ahead of the 5-year average.
Native cereal prices remain largely unchanged with green feed barley valued at €185/t and green feed wheat at €190/t approximately. For dried grains, this week Tirlan offered €227/t for wheat and €222/t for dry barley.
However, the oilseed complex continues to be broadly supported by global energy developments with global demand for biodiesel fuels strong. Prices for Paris oilseed rape Nov-26 closed down €5.75/t at €491.75/t on Friday due to optimism over new crop supplies and a cooling in crude oil prices. However, at the time of writing this week, prices have rebounded and trading above €500/t for new crop futures.
Native oilseed rape prices are trading between €460-470/t ex. farm at harvest while for dried oilseed rape in Nov-26, Tirlan offered a price of €500/t this week.

In Western Australia representative body GIWA has forecast that the wheat area in the region could fall by 17% this year to 3.68mha owing to concerns about fertiliser cost and availability.
