Pig Market Report 20th August

There was no change in Irish pig prices last Friday, with producers reporting an average price of circa €2.06 – 2.08/kg for pigs sold in ROI.

The average price for grade E carcasses in week 32 stood at 202.7c/kg (excluding VAT), practically the same as the previous week and is also -1.2% behind prices last month. This is also -3.7% lower than the same period last year.

In Europe, wheat prices steadied after earlier drops, helped by decent harvest quality in France and active futures trade, despite harvest delays in the north. Rapeseed bounced back strongly after the Canada-led slump, while heat is stressing sunflowers.

In the U.S., corn and wheat prices levelled off after a USDA forecast for a record corn crop hit markets earlier in the week. Soybeans and soymeal saw the strongest rebound on reduced planting estimates, with soymeal at a seven-week high.
