Pig Market Update 15th September

The pig price has held for this week in the main. Quotes today are at €1.52/1.54c/kg, but many suppliers still receiving around €1.54-1.58c/kg from plants this week. While the reducing pig price and continually rising feed price has squeezed margins for pig farmers, the immediate concern remains with the ability of some farmers to sell their pigs as needed. The throughput of pigs remains an issue and with the October bank holiday and Christmas holiday period some months off yet, it is an issue that the pig industry must plan for given the critical labour shortages.

Irish pig prices have dropped an average of 16c/kg since 2020 and feed prices have risen substantially.

The average composite feed price for 2020 was €305/tonne, this year to date the average composite feed price is €320/tonne currently.
