Pig Market Update 8th May

There was no announced change to Irish pig prices on Friday last however many farmers have reported increases of 2c/kg for this week’s pigs meaning that farmers are reporting quotes of at least €2.22 – €2.28 available from processors in ROI, with some reporting up to €2.30/kg. 

The average European price for a grade E carcass pig for week 17 was €2.19/kg (Excluding vat), which is still behind by 8.6% on prices for the same week last year according to the Commission and is slightly up on last month’s average EU grade E carcass price. 

Lidl UK have announced a £500 million commitment to the pork sector which includes linking cost of production to certain contracts.  

Unfavourable weather forecasts for wheat crops in Russia and other major exporting countries continue to drive prices.While larger barley crops are currently expected for key producers in 2024/25. The uncertain outlook for wheat is a key influence on barley currently.

The weekly throughput for week ending May 5th was 64,501 of which 1,672 were sows.
